Phillip House is the co-founder of Shield Environmental which was initially established in Bristol in 1979, as Shield Insulation Services.
When Shield Insulation Services first began operations, 80% of the works were insulation and 20% asbestos removal. Within 5 years, asbestos removal became the main focus of the business as demands changed.
As Shield continues to develop, Phillip has looked at strategic avenues of growing the business and spearheaded the company’s move into new geographical locations, opening new branches in Cornwall (1987), Falmouth (1989), Devon (1990), Southampton (1998) Newcastle (2006) and London, Durham, Wales, and Birmingham in 2011.
Whilst expanding the business Phillip has maintained steady control over the group, ensuring stability of the company for years to come.
In 2014, Phillip decided to take a step back from the daily running of Shield and became Chairman of the Board.
Luke joined Shield as a thermal insulation apprentice in 1996, progressing through the ranks swiftly, leading to him opening Shield’s Taunton branch in 2001, which subsequently grew and established itself successfully over a five year period.
Having gained valuable experience, Luke took over management of Shield’s head office in 2007 and soon after, the Birmingham branch, whilst also playing a key part in creating and establishing our asbestos licensed scaffold division.
In 2014, Luke was promoted to Managing Director for the group, and has since been instrumental in the diversification of the business; directing the establishment and organic growth of Shield’s demolition and scaffold divisions as well as being actively involved in establishing and overseeing the acquisitions of both Shield Mechanical & Electrical, and Shield Fire & Security.
Luke is now responsible for the oversight and direction of all the divisions within Shield ensuring the company continues to grow and prosper.
Rob joined Shield in 1988 as a site operative, originally to fund his architectural studies. Within two years, he had progressed to the role of company estimator.
In 1993, Rob opened Shield’s Plymouth branch, winning new clients and running projects in a completely new geographical area for the business.
Rob was promoted to regional director in 1999, offering support to several other branches as well as continuing to grow Shield’s presence across the Devon and Somerset region. In 2011 Shield’s Plymouth and Taunton branches were amalgamated, moving all operations to a single location in Exeter under Rob’s management.
As operations director for the group, Rob is actively involved with all levels of management and service delivery. He has managed various large-scale projects over the years and continues to offer support to other branches.
Business Development & Regional Director
Dean started in the asbestos industry in 1988 as an operative. Over the last 31 years, Dean has gained vast experience, knowledge and understanding in all aspects and sectors of the industry..
Dean has acted as Project Director on a National basis for some of the UK’s most prestigious clients and asbestos contracts. These contracts vary from Health Care, Social Housing, Public and Private Sectors, High Street stores and the Industrial and Petro chemical industries.
In addition to his ability to deliver technically challenging contracts and exceed client expectation, Dean applies a hands-on and pragmatic approach to his responsibilities.
As Regional Director for Wales, Dean is responsible for overseeing and supporting asbestos removal operations across Wales.
Divisional Directors and Regional Directors
Regional Director of Bristol, Birmingham and Warrington
Paul has over 10 years’ experience in the asbestos removals industry, originally joining Shield as an asbestos removal operative after leaving school.
Paul has quickly risen through the ranks, initially spending 2 years as an Asbestos Supervisor, before taking on more responsibility acting as a Site Manager, then Contracts Manager, Senior Contracts Manager, Branch Manager and finally, to date, Regional Director.
During his time at Shield Paul has managed many large scale projects including the Corsham Regeneration, Southmead Hospital, Cannington Court and MOD Foxhill.
As the Regional Director for the West, Manchester and Midlands, Paul oversees Shield’s Bristol, Warrington and Birmingham Asbestos branches.
Asbestos Regional Director - Southampton & London
Tim has over 25 years’ experience within the asbestos and thermal insulation industry. He began his career as a thermal insulation operative with Haydon & Co in 1989, where he progressed from operative to supervisor and then to thermal insulation manager in 1992.
Following the closure of Haydon & Co, Tim went on to work as an asbestos supervisor within nuclear power stations, oil refineries, Scotland Yard, and the Home Office.
Tim joined Shield in 2002 as an asbestos supervisor within the newly opened Southampton branch and subsequently promoted to branch manager in 2005. In this role Tim has managed asbestos removal works for a wide variety of clients within both the public and private sectors.
As the Regional Director for the South East, Tim manages both the Southampton and London offices, delivering a number of high profile contracts. Additonally he oversees a diverse portfolio of projects ranging from central London through to leafy suburbs, drawing on his vast range of skills, experience and technical knowhow.
Jamie has over 28 years’ experience working in the scaffolding industry and joined Shield Environmental Services in October 2017 as the Scaffolding Division Director.
Jamie has worked in the industrial, commercial and private sectors of the industry, on projects that have taken him to the Middle East and Europe for petro-chemical companies.
Jamie holds all relevant scaffolding qualifications and is NEBOSH qualified.
Mechanical & Electrical Director
Daniel joined Shield in 2015 as director of Shield Mechanical & Electrical, bringing with him over 20 years’ experience within the electrical industry.
Daniel started his career as an apprentice, going on to be a contracts manager running major projects. At 24, Daniel started his own business, undertaking projects across Bristol and beyond, which resulted in his company working alongside Shield to deliver projects.
As well having extensive knowledge of the Mechanical & Electrical industry, Daniel has a passion for keeping up-to-date with industry best practices and advances in equipment and technologies.
Fire & Security Director
Ross joined the Shield Group in 2016 as Director of Shield Fire & Security, bringing with him over 20 years of experience in the Fire & Security industry.
Ross began his career as an electrical / mechanical engineer apprentice for Brooks and has also worked for Chubb Fire & Security, Initial Fire and Security and Advance Systems installing large scale Access Control/Biometrics and fire systems across the UK and Europe.
Bret joined the shield group in 2018 and is the Managing director of Demolition services
Bret has 18 years’ experience in the demolition field, having started his career as a demolition operative and progressing his way up through the ranks to site manager, contracts manager and demolition director before becoming Managing Director for Shield.
He has worked in most areas of demolition and has undertaken large scale demolition and remediation projects in the commercial, industrial and residential sectors.
Dave joined Shield in 1993, bringing with him many years of experience in the marine industry.
Following major successes within the company Dave became marine operations manager, responsible for estimating, drafting, and purchasing of the company’s marine operations in the South West.
In 2001, Dave assumed the position of Marine Division Manager and runs the operations and management of the marine division as well as working closely with other divisions within Shield.
Dave is also a member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects MRINA.
Marine Operations Director, Southampton
Derek joined Shield Marine Services in June 2019; previous experience in the marine industry has been gained over 25 years, undertaking Procurement and Commercial roles at Wartsila UK , Serco & BAE systems.
Derek’s current role will involve business development, commercial and day to day management of Shield Marine Services.
Asbestos Branch Manager, Cornwall
Colin has over nine years’ experience within the asbestos industry, starting out as an asbestos analyst/surveyor and obtaining the Certificate of Competence for Asbestos after only a short while in the industry. He joined Shield as an auditor and shortly after was brought into the Cornwall Office as a Contracts Manager. Colin progressed quickly to Senior Contracts Manager having successfully secured and managed several large and specialist asbestos contracts such as the Tamar Bridge project and Derry’s in Plymouth.
During his time with Shield, Colin has established a significant presence for Shield in the Plymouth area (securing some key regional client’s and some large and specialist removal contracts), increasing the profile for Shield in the South West region generally.
Having worked in both practical and managerial roles, Colin has through understanding of both task and team needs, and always strives to fully comply with the client’s requirements, whilst maintaining a strong relationship with them. Now operating as the Cornwall Asbestos Branch Manager, Colin is responsible for the everyday running of the branch, which involves heading an experienced team to ensure the branch’s projects are planned and operated successfully.
Asbestos Branch Manager, Southampton
Jason joined Shield in 2017 and worked his way up to Senior Contracts Manager and then to his current role as Branch Manager.
Jason has worked within the Asbestos Removal industry since 1994, starting out as an asbestos operative and quickly moving up to become a supervisor. Working all over the country, Jason has experience with Domestic Properties, Government Buildings, MOD Sites, Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, large retail stores and cruise ships.
Asbestos Branch Manager, Bristol
Dean joined Shield in 2011, almost immediately after completing his degree. Starting out with the frameworks office and dealing with key accounts, Dean then moved on to Operations followed by Contracts. In 2017, Dean was promoted to Branch Manager for Bristol, overseeing all asbestos removals projects in the area.
Asbestos Branch Manager, Cardiff
Barry started within the asbestos industry in 1982 as an operative. He has worked on numerous projects and quickly progressed to become an asbestos supervisor with the added responsibility of running contracts.
Some of his UK projects have included being one of the first site based asbestos people to work alongside the HSE, using and testing the red box injection system, prior to industry implementation.
Barry has previously managed works with Laing O’Rourke and Willmott Dixon for the A&E department and ward refurbishment at Prince Charles Hospital. His past experience includes high profile locations such as Buckingham Palace, St. James Palace, Sotheby’s, Bankside Power Station which is now the Tate Modern Art Gallery and QE2. Barry also has a wide range of experience in the various sectors including Education, Health care, Public Buildings, Petro Chemical, Steel Industry, British Nuclear Industry and Defence Industry.
Asbestos Branch Manager, Warrington
Ryan joined Shield in 2009 starting his career in the asbestos industry as an asbestos removal operative.
Quickly progressing through the grades, Ryan was promoted to Contracts Manager in 2013, successfully running asbestos removal projects throughout the Bristol, Midlands and latterly North regions.
In 2016, Ryan took on the role as Branch Manager of the newly established Manchester Branch, and is responsible for the daily running of the Manchester Branch, ensuring projects are planned and operated successfully, and developing a strong presence for Shield in this region.
Asbestos Branch Manager, Birmingham
Richard Begley has extensive experience in the Asbestos sector having worked for the last twenty years in a variety of roles at demolition and asbestos firms around the Midlands. Richard started first on the tools, working as an Operative and Supervisor before working as a specialist asbestos Surveyor, and then a Contracts Manager.
In his three years at Shield, Richard’s knowledge has proved invaluable and he now works as the Birmingham Branch Manager, taking on the responsibility of the everyday running of the branch, which involves heading a team of 10 Supervisors and 10 Operatives, overseeing contracts and ensuring projects run smoothly.
Marine Branch Manager, Southampton
Alex joined the Shield Marine team in 2017 as part of a team to drive forward the Southampton branch. Alex’s responsibilites include developing the marine capability and service offering to incorporate cruise ship business.
Alex’s previous experience includes working for south coast based outfitting companies specialising in the upgrade and new fit of accommodation and flooring areas on all types of vessels including military ships and cruise and ferry projects.
Marine Branch Manager, Falmouth
Martin joined Shield in 2004 working as an Asbestos removal operative within the Marine Division and general hands on working alongside laggers and joiners.
Martin was promoted to supervisor before being promoted to Operations Manager and since 2015, has been the Branch Manager for the Falmouth site.
Originally from an engineering and design background, Martine now has extensive practical and technical knowledge in all aspects of the work undertaken within the marine sector. He has also gained experience in overseeing all marine projects from Health and Safety to planning and delivery.
Marine Site Manager, Newcastle
Gary joined Shield in 2016. Having previously worked in the construction industry, Gary has developed his skills to suit the Marine industry. Starting out as a joiner and insulator, Gary has since progressed to become manager and is now responsible for overseeing marine operations in the north of England.
Marine Manager, Scotland
Brian joined Shield in 2015 as Marine Manager for Scotland and is responsible for the growth and expansion of the Shield Marine division in the region as well as client relationship management.
Brian’s previous experience includes the Merchant Navy, the shipbuilding industry in Germany, The Netherlands and Japan and Chief Engineer and Machinery Inspector on new-builds.
Marine Contracts Manager, Cornwall
John has worked with the Shield Marine division since 2007, starting out as a general labourer and progressing on to be the first thermographic surveyer for the business. Having carried out many insulation projects over the years, John has a solid understanding of the applications and materials used within this sector.
As the contracts manager for Truro marine branch, John manages all projects for the branch, getting involved at every stage and ensuring successful end-to-end delivery.
Insulation Branch Manager, Cornwall
Martin started within the Thermal Insulation industry over 45 years ago and has since worked solely in this industry. Starting an apprenticeship in 1972, which he passed fully qualified in 1977, Martin has since become a Sheet Metal Fabrication and Pattern Development specialist. Over the last four decades, Martin has worked on numerous projects and has become fully qualified in all specifications of insulation, including Acoustic and Fire Protection. Martin also has extensive experience in the independent engineering and services business, and as a result of previously running his own company, has a keen understanding of the demands this particular industry gives rise to.
Since coming to Shield, Martin has overseen all insulation works throughout the group, including working alongside our many asbestos teams to supply technical support to both colleagues and clients alike. He is also experienced in drawing Take-Offs, as well as estimating and purchasing, a skill set which he has demonstrated to many clients, including but not limited to Balfour Beatty, EG Allingham and the NHS Trust.
Asbestos Branch Manager, Exeter
Andy has over 18 years’ experience within the asbestos industry, starting out as an operative and working his way up to Branch Manager and covering a number of different roles along the way. Andy brings with him experience in handling, transporting & managing asbestos waste and a full understanding of the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 (as amended) and CAR 2012 Regulation 24.
Since joining Shield in 2014, Andy has demonstrated strong organisational and leadership skills, communicating effectively with site teams, office staff, Clients and building occupants. Having worked in both a practical and managerial role, Andy has a thorough understanding of task and team needs and has strived to fully comply with the Client’s requirements.
Andy prides himself on maintaining strong client relationships, proven by the repeat business he brings to the company. Having on site experience enables him to identify site issues and deal with them effectively whilst mentoring those in his branch.
